This supported 3-day, ~45 mile loop around Diamond Peak is going to be a truly wonderful mountain tour with a great small group! Starting at Vivian Lake Trailhead (Wilderness Self-Issue Permit required) on the west side of Diamond Peak, folks start a counter clockwise loop around the peak to Spring Campground on beautiful Crescent Lake on Day 1, then from Crescent its up and over to Trapper Creek Campground on the amazing Odell Lake on Day 2, and from there it's back west to the cars, just one more climb over the crest to close the loop on Day 3. This is a sweet route showcasing some of Central Oregon's finest big lakes and rolling terrain! We provide all the support and logistics to make this trip a reality, everything except being on trail with you.
Please note this is a tough, multi-day adventure and not to be taken lightly! There are several climbs and descents, creek crossings and variable terrain, weather/sun exposure, etc. You should be able to comfortably complete a 25k (~15 mile) trail run/hike w/ 2-3k feet of climbing/descending, + be familiar w/ the route, navigation, using GPS, and trail safety in general, etc.*
*This is NOT A GUIDED TRIP. All participants are responsible for themselves.
Friday, August 2nd- Day 1:
Meet at Vivian Lake Trailhead between 8-10 am to drop off gear/supplies to be transported to Spring Campground and start your adventure! This is the biggest day, right off the bat, at ~20 miles, traveling southbound on the west side of Diamond Peak, then wrapping around east to around the south shoulder of the mountain to start a long gradual descent to the lake (and swimming!). Tents and food/refreshments will be awaiting you! :)
Saturday, August 3rd - Day 2:
A full, fun-filled summer day with plenty of time to do as you wish! The route is ~12 miles* up and over a low pass to the north, ending on Odell Lake, another beautiful HUGE lake that you'll be camped on (and swimming in!), so there are options to have a leisurely morning before hitting the trail; or leave early and have a long, mellow afternoon... whatever you want!
*There is an option to extend the route from Crescent Lake to Odell Lake by 8 miles (making it another ~20 mile day instead of 12), by touring to Fawn Lake and through the pass between Lakeview and Redtop Mountains.
Your gear will be awaiting you at Trapper Creek Campground. Settle in, swim and relax while we prepare dinner. This will be another glorious night of camping under the stars in a beautiful location.
Sunday, August 4th - Day 3:
Coffee/ Breakfast at the campground before packing up and heading west for the final push to close out the loop. Savor the final ~12 miles, climbing up to the crest once more to make it back to the west side and your waiting car. Success!
